We who live in Florida have learned to cope with the constant threat of hurricanes. Though some people here and in nearby states (and in all the world for that matter) have been devastated by nature's fierce assertions, statistically most Floridians fare well, especially in the central and north sections on the Gulf of Mexico.
With the exception of hurricane Charley's battering of Charlotte Harbor in 2004 (you don't hear press any more about them) storms in the Gulf or south of Florida end up making landfall west of us - Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
The storms that cross the state get slowed down significantly over land, and rarely blow through us any less than a category two. Hurricanes are nothing to sneeze at, and should not be underestimated. That was one reason a block house was one of our required criteria when looking for a home. That and septic.
