USF Riverfront Park - Tampa, Florida

In Tampa on the Hillsborough River a new park arose in 2006. The University of South Florida apparently has a large tract of land, and it is mostly for the enjoyment and use of the staff and students there. But we come in quietly, cause no harm and leave no "mark", so thus far, aside from the signs upon entry to the park there has been no problem playing this well-laid-out, mixed-vegetation park.

The front nine are in an open field-like area with sparce trees, volleyball courts and picnic areas. There is a massive rope and pole structure at the west end, surely used by the ROTC or some para-military group for exercises. A few of the holes go alongside the river. On the other side, it seems like USF park may be adjacent to the much larger Hillsborough State Park. It's quite beautiful. In spite of the "Students Only" indications, Lee was told first-hand that the clubhouse does not mind non-students as long as they respect the course and leave only "footprints".

The back nine takes a considerably different slant. It's the "old Florida wilderness", with a lot of palmetto plants and other low-lying foilage that will keep you hunting for an errant disk (haven't lost one there yet).

Be careful, this part closes early (7:00 in the summertime) and is occasionally closed between semesters. You might want to check ahead before you drive there.

Not dramatically different or superior to most of the courses in Pinellas, but good for a challenge and a change. We give it "two thumbs up".
