DISC GOLF PARK CLOSED April 01, 2010 - SORRY
|
In Dunedin, adjacent to the famous Dunedin Country Club (PGA National Golf Course until 1962), WAS a "ball" golf course that also has disc golf baskets! The only one of its kind in the area, St. Andrews Links is a pay-to-play disc golf course with some interesting challenges. It costs $5 to play, and another $12 to rent a cart (not an option for me), but as a rare event it's quite a bit of fun. We usually play late in the day, and by then, the golfers are fewer, so there's not a big crowd to wait on or (more likely in the case of ball golf) wait on us.

There's not a preponderance of shade at St. Andrews. You can find it, but there are a lot of big open fairways. There are bald eagles nesting there, way up top, and water comes into play several times. Sometimes dramatically.
First time out I lost a beloved Roc in the swampy hole -- I was unwilling to trudge in after it. That's always unfortunate. Don't fall in love with a disc or don't throw it at a risky hole if you do.
You can drink beer on a golf course, it's private property. But I was told when we played last that they insist you buy their drinks. I didn't see that sign, or see any "golf girls", so I just kept my indiscretion on the low-down.
There are quite a few "gorilla" holes (long distances require big arms) but of course the lawn is well-maintained, so rollers are encouraged. This course gets our occasional-play "thumbs up".
